First off, let me specify that for this research, I was looking into a cordless nailer for doing trim and other finish work. I may look into more heavy duty nailers in the future, but for most of us do it yourselfers, this is the size of nailer we’ll be after.
With that said, I was always pretty skeptical of cordless nailers when I saw them. “Some power tools are just not meant to be cordless,” I thought. However, after doing some extensive research for a trim work cordless nailer, I fell in love with the Dewalt DC608K cordless nail gun.
What to Look for When Buying a Cordless Nail Gun
It didn’t take my long to realize that there are a few important things to keep in mind when buying a drill. These are:
The gauge of nails
The weight of the nail gun
Dealing with jams
Don’t just buy any nail gun, because these factors can have a huge impact on your experience with you nail gun. So I’ll try to explain all these points in relation to the Dewalt DC608K cordless nailer..
What gauge nails do I need?
This can often come down to what you’re actually looking for. When doing trim, the 18 gauge is wonderful because it’s lighter weight and seems to jam far less than other, heavier gauge guns. When I’m doing heavier work, yes, I want a bigger nailer, but for doing trim work for remodels, I hate lugging around a bigger gun, and I often find that they end up damaging some of the trim pieces I’m using. While I don’t do it myself, I have read many reviews from people that do a ton of cabinetry work and absolutely swear by this gauge and the Dewalt DC608K in particular.
What about the battery?
This drill packs an 18v battery good for 1000 nails or more at a time. I tend to have smaller projects that don’t require anywhere close to needing a new battery, but reading from other people’s experience on Amazon, on a single charge, most can do fairly large projects. Obviously there’s battery drain when not in use for long periods, but in the worst case situations you can always charge it and be full in an hour. You can always opt for an extra battery and never go without. There is plenty of power to be found and you will be nothing but satisfied for the type of work you’re doing with this nailer.
The weight of the nail gun
Here is where cordless shines. No cord, no cord, no cord!! This gun weighs in at 7.4 pounds, which feels wonderful when you have it in your hand and you’re comparing it to lugging around that hose everywhere. You don’t usually think about the weight of the tugging hose, but when you first use this it’s like pure bliss compared to that tug. There are light nailers out there, but you sacrifice a lot to get there, and I think the Dewalt DC608K strikes the perfect balance of weight to reliance and value.
The sucktastic Jam...
I hate that sound. You know the one. That sound a nail gun makes when it jams and you try to shoot another nail. This Dewalt attacks jams in 2 huge ways that I really feel set it apart from the other cordless nailers in this category. The first is the box style magazines that are specifically designed to seal out dust and debris that cause malfunction and jams in the first place. I will say that my feeling (as I haven’t done scientific testing) as well as what numerous other people have stated in reviews on Amazon, is that I have FAR fewer jams with this nailer compared to others due to this design. The second way that Dewalt DC608K attacks jams is by having an easy access to the nose piece to remove any debris and clear jams. Overall this is a big factor in the satisfaction of this nailer.
Which mode...options for the win!
I’ll finish up describing the Dewalt DC608K Cordless Nail Gun by talking about one of my favorite things. I love having sequential operating mode as well as bump operating mode. With the sequential operating mode you can have more precise placement when doing fine work. With bump operating mode, you obviously just need to push in the mechanism on the end of the gun, it allows for very rapid(up to 5 nails a second) placement of nails when you don’t need to be as precise. Having the option is wonderful!
How Much Should You Expect to Pay?
The Dewalt DC608K retails for around $270 or so, but you can find a lot better deals on Amazon in the low $200’s.
1 hour charger
18V XRP battery
DEWALT Safety Glasses
Does it include a Warranty?
Yes, the Dewalt DC608K includes a 3 year limited warranty and also includes a 2 year free service contract on the XRP batteries if you have issues with them.
What Others Are Saying
This nailer has received great reviews all over the web, with an average of 4.7 out of 5 from reviewers on Amazon.
Here are some of the comments to date:
“Perfect tool to do trim”
“Love this nailer!”
“WOW, I am LOVING this Nailer!”
“I wish they all worked this well”
“Best on the Market!!!”
“Awesome fun and practical”
There are very few complaints on this nailer. They are usually limited to people trying to do something with it that is generally outside the realm of what it is made for. I also would love to have it weigh a couple pounds less...but I’m also realistic here!
